We are Triggertrap, and we create awesome ways for you to trigger your camera, on iPhone, Android, and Arduino. Triggertrap originally started as a Kickstarter project, which was a lot more successful than we dared hope for. We raised 300% of the amount we asked for, and quickly realised that it was time to look at how we were going to go from there.

What are the key factors that have helped your store be successful?

When our Kickstarter campaign first completed, we were faced with a tricky question: How in the world were we going to keep selling our products? We went through an absolute nightmare with PayPal (long story, but the short version is that they suspended our account because we grew too rapidly, and then held on to $10k of our money for a very long time). When we tried Google Checkout, we were also immediately blocked for the high amount of traffic we were doing.

Finally, we tried selling via Amazon, which was fantastic (as we didn't have to deal with the payment processing side of things), but Amazon does take a rather large slice of the pie, and since we were generating most of our own sales, we discovered that we were leaving a lot of money on the table in the process.

We researched our next solution for a long time, and finally found the perfect solution: We partnered with a warehousing solution that gave us the flexibility to have warehouses in three different continent. We found a solid credit card payment processing solution. And - most importantly - we went for Shopify and never looked back.

We created a slightly customized shopfront for Shopify, which meant that we had a camera support selector (try it out on here) that turned out to be a fantastic tool: Customers would always need to check which of our camera connection cables they needed for their camera, and when they went through that process, they ended up on the correct product page.

What are your top recommendations for new store owners?

Think like a brick-and-mortar shop: Upselling is important, and if it's possible to recover abandoned carts (hint: Yes, and it's extremely effective), do so!

Any Closing Remarks?

As a company, we've experienced an awful lot of pain in getting our e-commerce and logistics sorted out. Switching to Shopify has been one of the best moves we've made in the history of Triggertrap.
