Shopify @ South by Southwest 2012

Shopify and South by Southwest 2012 logos

South by Southwest (a.k.a. 'SxSW') is an annual conference -- or more accurately, three conferences in one -- in Austin, Texas and is widely regarded as the conference to go to learn and talk about music, film and interactive technologies. John Mayer and James Blunt made their first big splashes at the music conference, the Oscar-winning films The Hurt Locker and Undefeated debuted at the film conference, and FacebookTwitter and Foursquare all caught mainstream attention thanks to their presentations at the interactive conference (often referred to as "SxSWi").

Shopify's at SxSWi to do all sorts of things: talk about what we're doing (which includes the Shopify Fund), meet with other technology companies and see if there are ways we can do things together, say hello to our friends, shopowners and future shopowners, throw a party and even participate in a panel discussion!

The Shopify Party

The Shopify Party

We're throwing a little "warm-up party" on Saturday afternoon and if you're in Austin, attending SxSW or not, we'd love to see you there! Whether you're a long-time Shopify shopowner or just curious about Shopify, this is your chance to meet us and our chance to get to know you and answer your questions. Whether you're a merchant thinking about selling stuff or services online, a designer who's heard about the lucrative business of creating Shopify themes or an app developer wondering what the Shopify Fund is all about -- or perhaps you're just looking for libations and lively conversation -- you'll want to his this party. And yes, the drinks and finger food are on us!

(Best of all, it's in the afternoon, which will give you time to grab some dinner and hit the king-sized parties in the evening.)

Hosting the party will be these Shopifolks:

  • Cody Fauser (@codyfauser), Chief Technical Officer
  • Daniel Weinand (@danielweinand), Chief Design Officer
  • Edward Ocampo-Gooding (@edwardog), Developer Advocate
  • Harley Finkelstein (@hfizzle), Chief Platform Officer
  • Mark Hayes (@allsop8184), Marketing and PR Guy

Shopify Speaks: 5 Brands Travel the US Inspiring Entrepreneurship (Sunday, March 11th, Omni Downtown Hotel, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.)

I’ll be speaking on the panel at the session titled 5 Brands Travel the US Inspiring Entrepreneurship. It’s a talk about the what, how and why behind the BarCamp Tour and the companies who were behind it (Batchbook,GrasshopperMailchimpShopify and Wufoo). Here’s the abstract for this talk:

Grasshopper, Mailchimp, Wufoo, Shopify, and Batchbook all joined forces in 2011 to create and execute the Barcamp Tour. We journeyed across the country together to work with 10 different entrepreneurial cities and help them put on a barcamp that would inspire / energize their communities. We shared our passions, listened to other peoples, and took in the unique character of each city we visited. Boy did we learn a lot. We would love to share those observations & experiences with you in hopes that you might take that passion back to your own community. We also wanted to explain why our 5 brands so strongly believe in free beer and hugs versus banner ads and trade shows. These word of mouth branding tactics have been a major part of all 5 of our company’s growth, and we are ready to share our secrets!

The session takes place on Sunday, March 11th. Usually, the Sunday slot is the kiss of death, but our talk takes place in the hangover-friendly timeslot: 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. We’ll be presenting at the Omni Downtown Hotel (700 San Jacinto, at 8th Street) in the Lone Star room.

Watch This Space!

We'll be posting dispatches in both the main Shopify Blog as well as the Shopify Technology Blog, with the latest news from the interactive and ecommerce worlds, along with amusing photos (something that South by Southwest is very good for).
